I suffered badly one night at the hands of Mr. Knopfler —- damn we waited all night for them to play just this song — my running buddy JS and I were bellowing him for it…..then they did a cheesy version in an encore! It scared me — I never bought another Dire Straits album — it’s tough for a bad that has to play song that get almost too popular. So with that in mind I was listening to my copy of this one again…brilliant and I can fall in love with it all over again now it’s blaring at us from every audio orifice! The Tuesday Songs We Need To Revisit selection of the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner! Peace to y’all!
Just one of the best songs of it’s era and it’s genre —- to me Pop music is as fine an edge to write in as what Muddy did or what Mr. Waits does…..The Brothers Gibb were up there with Lennon and McCartney. Perhaps not as deep a file but truly gifted song crafters to be sure. RIP Robin Gibb and thank you for the music!
“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”—CARL SAGAN (via Advice to Writers)
