I have mixed emotions in the aftermath of Notre Dame’s OT loss at home on senior day to UConn. Sure, it’s nice to see Randy Edsall’s charges get that win for their fallen teammate Jasper Howard after failing dramatically to do so the last three weeks. I can’t imagine all of the emotion that must go along with that. Big ups to the Huskies, they won this game and they deserved it, for sure.

Then there’s Weis. I’ve done a good job of convincing myself that he’s a villian in the past few weeks. I still don’t think that he’s a good coach, but it’s hard to ignore how much this team and this school means to him. He obviously cares deeply about his players and the team’s entrance today showed that. But he’s just not good enough as a coach. I hope that he resigns before the administration fires him. He deserves to leave in a dignified way after all that he has given to this program. He will leave the football team better than he found it, even if it hasn’t shown up in the win column.

I wish you the best, Charlie Weis. It’s unfortunate that you weren’t able to deliver on your promises to return the Irish to national prominence. Don’t think that we believe you didn’t try.

Godspeed, Chaz. Don’t look back in anger.

Weis is ill-suited to be a college coach. His tenure as head coach at Notre Dame is obviously not working out and it is best for everyone involved for him to move on. However, he put forth all the effort he could and left this program in far better shape than he found it. I wish him the best and hope he finds success back in the NFL where he belongs. -MATC

IBM simulates a cat’s cerebral cortex using a supercomputer. The numbers are staggering: using almost 150,000 processors and 144 terabytes of memory, the program simulated the roughly 1 billion neurons and 10 trillion synapses (connections between neurons) of a cat’s brain. Even with this massive processing power, the simulation ran a hundred times slower than a real cat’s brain. (The researchers fed the artificial brain images of corporate logos. If I was a brain in a vat, I’d want my fantasy world to be a little livelier.)

A deeper question is whether this kind of simulation is telling us anything new. It seems — and this is, of course, extremely speculative, as is everything regarding actual artificial intelligence — entirely possible that we could duplicate a human brain in silicon, yet come no closer to understanding the brain’s operation. AI might be useful, but will it ever satisfy our very human curiosity about how and why stuff, in this case, the mind, works? Who knows. When dealing with the nature of consciousness, very little is certain.
